Fall Back, Move Forward

As we turn back the clocks this weekend, shorter days also signal the arrival of bigger waves and more demanding ocean conditions. The work we put in consistently, day after day, prepares us for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

This past week, Ricardo had the opportunity to present at the Big Wave Safety Summit in Half Moon Bay, joining a community of watermen and women dedicated to advancing safety, preparation, and performance in some of the ocean's most demanding conditions.Gatherings like this provide an opportunity to exchange knowledge, learn from one another, and reinforce an important principle: even among the most experienced, mastery is never a finished product. It's built through repetition, refinement, and a willingness to keep learning.

These ideas are reflected in the work of Brad Stulberg, author of The Way of Excellence, who emphasizes:

Consistency over intensity. Fundamentals over fads. Progress over perfection.

For anyone following baseball this past week, the Milwaukee Brewers offered a wonderful example of these principles in action. With eight postseason appearances in the past nine seasons, their success didn't happen overnight. It's been built through years of patience, player development, teamwork, and a commitment to doing the little things well. Their first World Series championship was a reminder of what consistent effort, sustained over time, can accomplish.

No matter the goal, the same principles apply. Through consistency and deliberate practice, we build not only our skills and abilities, but also the confidence, awareness, and self-control to navigate challenges, adapt to changing conditions, and perform at our best. Perhaps just as importantly, we develop patience, resilience, and a greater understanding of ourselves along the way.

As the clocks turn back, bringing shorter days and bigger waves, let's remember that moving forward isn't always about doing more. Sometimes it's about doing the little things well, consistently, over time.

Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep practicing.
